David Fairchild was born in 1838 in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1867 and his PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1870. He was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan in 1881, but became famous for his work on malaria at the Harvard School of Public Health. After retiring from that position, he worked on control of yellow fever and other diseases.
